On June 2 1946, after the results of the "referendum istituzionale", Italy called upon its people to choose between a monarchy or a republic. Overwhelmingly, Italy became a republic. The "Festa Nazionale" a symbol of a new nation was created in 1948 and a solemn holiday with a parade of the Italian Armed Forces took place.
The first parade was in Via Dei Fori Imperiali in Rome on June 2, 1948. In 1950 for the first time, the parade was inserted among the celebrations for the Festa Della Repubblica.
After being changed and sometimes suspended for various reasons, it is now taking place annually and it constitutes "The Symbol of National Aggregation".
