150th Anniversary of
Puccini and More
On April 4, 2009, Lucchesi nel Mondo of Pittsburgh presented an evening of "150th Anniversary of Puccini & More," the first in what is hoped to become a series of musical programs dedicated to the memory of our beloved Lorenzo Malfatti. Those who attended this lovely event will attest to the success of a wonderful evening. On that night, we musically celebrated the 150th anniversary of the birth of Puccini, renowned composer and Tuscany's favorite son. Our own favorite artist, John DelMonte, displayed his wonderful Puccini-related works, which were also available for sale. Doors opened at 7:00 at The Frick Fine Arts Building on The University of Pittsburgh campus, right across from Oakland's Carnegie Library. The evening began with delicious light refreshments provided by Board Member, Carla Branduzzi of Piccolo Forno. Italian white and red wines were available for sale. Those in attendance socialized and partook of the typical Tuscan fare as they viewed the art exhibit in the pleasant ambiance of The Frick Fine Arts Building. At 8:00, the doors opened to the auditorium and, after a welcome by President Henry DeLuca, the musical program began. The theater seats fewer than 200 people, so there wasn't a bad seat in the house.
The audience was treated to the magnificent voices of Lorenzo's students—mezzo soprano Mary Sue Hyatt, one of his first students who has had an illustrious career in both opera and academia; Tim Culver, whose beautiful baritone was also featured in our opera of several years ago at the PAA; Rebecca Zaner, a marvelous 16-year-old soprano, who was Lorenzo's last student. Young Rebecca travelled with her family from Arizona to be part of the program. Canonsburg native, Lauren Broglia, who now resides in Rome, made the trip to Pittsburgh to be featured in the lineup. We offered a special discount for club members, in hopes that all would join us. We're grateful that many of you participated in yet another great opportunity for us to come together and share with others in celebration of our rich Tuscan culture.
